Description

OpenStack is an open-source IaaS platform — compute (Nova), block storage (Cinder), networking (Neutron), identity (Keystone), and a web console (Horizon) among its many projects. Not something this project installs or manages directly: it's what Infomaniak Public Cloud runs on underneath, the actual substrate every resource in storage.tofu/compute.tofu gets provisioned against.

Features

  • Compute, storage, and networking as APIs — Nova, Cinder, and Neutron, each independently addressable, not a single monolithic control plane.
  • Keystone identity — application credentials scoped to specific API actions (see Walkthrough → Backups → OpenStack Snapshot Scheduler for a concrete access-rules-scoped example), separate from a human console login.
  • Horizon — a web console for the same resources the CLI and OpenTofu manage, useful for a quick look without a terminal, though it carries its own gap (see Usage patterns).

Usage patterns

License and governance

Apache-2.0. Governed by the OpenInfra Foundation (renamed from the OpenStack Foundation in 2021 to reflect hosting other projects too — Kata Containers, StarlingX, Zuul), with over 600 contributing companies. Infomaniak itself is an OpenInfra Foundation member running OpenStack in production since 2014, contributing upstream rather than just consuming it — including maintaining OpenStack's own Debian packaging.

Conclusion

Why you would — not really a choice being evaluated here — it's the platform Infomaniak Public Cloud already runs on, genuinely open (Apache-2.0, foundation-governed, no single vendor able to change the terms), with a real, addressable API surface OpenTofu's provider drives directly.

Why you wouldn't — not applicable in the same way the rest of this catalog is; this isn't a tool being chosen so much as the ground everything else stands on. Worth knowing its own gaps regardless — Horizon's missing second factor being the concrete one already tracked elsewhere in these docs. See Apache CloudStack for the actual alternative Infomaniak weighed OpenStack's complexity against.
